New Delhi, October 3— Congress youth icons Priyanka Gandhi and her brother and MP Rahul Gandhi on Saturday visited the family of the young girl who was gang-raped and brutally assaulted by four people in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh. The young Gandhis hugged and consoled the father and mother of the girl who succumbed to brutality last week.

The Gandhis had gone to meet the victim family on Thursday also – but they were physically stopped by the UP police on Delhi-Hathras highway itself. Saturday afternoon, they again left Delhi to meet the family. To prevent them from proceeding to Hathras, the UP government had deployed police and security personnel in large number on the DND flyway that connects Delhi and Noida. They were again physically stopped. However, at last, the state government allowed them to proceed to Hathras and meet the family.

They were the first political leaders to meet the family since the incident took place on September 14. The brutal incident outraged the nation, forcing the state administration to recommend a CBI enquiry into the case Saturday evening. The four accused have already been arrested by the local police.

The young Gandhis have shown the way to the political class of the country. Victims whoever they are and of whatever atrocity – they do not need words of sympathy by politicians through social media and TV bytes. They deserve genuine hugging and consoling.
