Aligarh, October 1— Eminent historian and author of international repute, Dr Gail Minault, Professor Emerita from the University of Texas at Austin, has been selected for the prestigious Sir Syed Excellence Award 2020 in the international category. In the national category, the same award will be conferred on Mumbai-based educational conglomerate Anjuman-I-Islam.
Prof Minault is a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and has taught at the University of Texas since 1972. Her seminal work on the 19th and 20th century history of India, including religion, politics, intellectual and social history and women’s movements is held in high esteem across the globe, said the Aligarh Muslim University in a press statement on Thursday. She is a well-known author on Islam in South Asia and has written highly acclaimed books such as the Khilafat Movement: Religious Symbolism and Political Mobilization in India (1982) and Secluded Scholars: Women’s Education and Muslim Reform in Colonial India (1997).
Anjuman-I-Islam will get the same award in the national category.
Anjuman, currently headed by Dr Zahir I Kazi, was established in the year 1874 by a group of visionaries led by Justice Badruddin Tyabji. The organization has a distinguished record of dedication and perseverance for the cause of education. They run more than 100 institutions from pre-primary schools to graduate and postgraduate level including College of Engineering, Polytechnics, Unani Medical College, Institute of Management Studies etc.
“It has a high reputation of being a minority organization catering to the needs of more than 1.10 lacs students from various communities under its umbrella focussed on quality education, transparency and growth,” said the AMU.
The awards will be conferred on the recipients during the Sir Syed Day commemorative function which will be held online on October 17, 2020.
The announcement about the awards was made in a meeting of Sir Syed Day Celebration Committee by AMU Vice Chancellor Prof Tariq Mansoor.
AMU VC has congratulated the awardees.
“Congratulations to the awardees for being honoured with the Sir Syed Excellence Award in the Centenary Year of AMU. They have made a valuable contribution in furthering the ideals and mission of our beloved founder, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan,” he said in a tweet.
The international category award carries a cash prize of Rs two lakhs and the awardee in the national category will get Rs one lakh.
