New Delhi, November 23— On the eve of his 34th birthday, renowned cricketer Suresh Raina has announced to provide toilets, drinking water and adolescent health facilities at 34 schools across the country.
“Giving back to the society that has given me so much has always been my guiding philosophy. As I turn 34, I’m excited to launch my most special project yet with @grfcare & @UnstoppableYUVA to provide toilets, drinking water & adolescent health programs across 34 schools in India,” former India batsman Raina tweeted Monday afternoon.
He will do these philanthropic activities in Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and NCR in association with his NGO, Gracia Raina Foundation (GRF) and Yuva Unstoppable. The initiative is likely to ensure health and hygiene to over 10,000 children studying in these schools.
Raina retired from the international cricket on August 15 this year.
According to PTI news agency, Raina, along with his wife Priyanka, a co-founder of the foundation, kicked off his birthday week by inaugurating the upgraded drinking water facility, separate toilets for boys and girls, hand washing, dish washing area and smart classrooms at Govt Composite Middle School in the Noor Nagar Sihani area of Ghaziabad district in Uttar Pradesh.
On the occasion, the couple also donated ration kits to 500 mothers from underprivileged backgrounds.
The cricketer shared some photos of the event on Twitter.
“It brings me immense joy to celebrate my 34th birthday with this initiative. Every child deserves quality education, this includes their right to have access to safe and clean drinking water and toilet facilities in schools. I hope we can contribute to this with Gracia Raina Foundation collaborating with Yuva Unstoppable,” Raina was quoted as saying by the news agency.
“It is truly humbling to see the upgraded facilities benefiting thousands of kids. This is an excellent start and we look forward to transforming many more schools in the future. There was no better way I could have celebrated my birthday, it was a truly heartwarming experience,” he said.
In a tweet, the Gracia Raina Foundation said: “As our founder @ImRaina turns 34 this week, we are proud to announce that @grfcare is associating with @UnstoppableYUVA to provide new toilets, drinking water, smart class facilities & adolescent health education across 34 schools in India benefiting upto 10000 students.”
The foundation further said: “This will be a year-long project. Having these facilities will not just ensure education & health of these children, it also helps the school retain the students & have more enrolments. Such facilities are crucial for the physical, mental & reproductive health of students.”
